Intent: Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. We want children to have a high-quality mathematics education, therefore, providing a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

We aim to enhance and enrich the lives of children by enabling them to make the most of learning opportunities within and beyond the curriculum.

Maths at NCJPS

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment.

A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

At NCJPS, we have designed our maths curriculum to enable our children to:

- demonstrate quick recall of facts and procedures (this includes the recollection of the times tables)

- demonstrate flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics

- show ability to recognise relationships and make connections in mathematics

- show confidence in believing that they will achieve

- show a high level of pride in the presentation and understanding of the work

- utilise opportunities outside the classroom including home learning to enrich experience

- develop enquiry skills to pursue their own interests within a topic and further questioning

- become increasingly critical and analytical within their thinking

- retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning

- learn without limits, making cross-curricular links to secure application and mastery

Cross-curricular outcomes in maths are specifically planned for, with strong links between the history, geography, science and Art/DT curriculum lessons enabling further contextual learning.

Planning is informed by and aligned with the National Curriculum. Long term planning ensures that knowledge and skills are progressive between year groups and ensures learning builds on prior learning. At NCJPS, we follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning.

Vocabulary is explicitly taught to enable children to articulate their learning and grow their knowledge of the world. Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion. Outcomes of work are monitored to ensure that they reflect a sound understanding of the key identified knowledge and skills.

Children leave NCJPS as confident, capable mathematicians and with a positive attitude towards maths.
